Character History: Gregory is Wirt’s younger brother and is about six years old. Wirt’s mother remarried and had Greg, making him Wirt’s half-brother.
Greg spends his life generally being an adorable child with boundless optimism and gumption. Despite being lost with his brother in The Unknown for who-even-knows how long, he never gives up and never really even seems to regret being lost in the first place. Even legitimate danger in The Unknown doesn’t seem to faze him; he seems to see the fun in everything, even in monsters. When faced with a gigantic wolf his first response is to tell it how beautiful its eyes are, and later while in mortal danger from the wolf Greg tells Wirt that he thinks this is just great.
This all seems to be because Greg approaches The Unknown with childlike dream logic. Nothing in The Unknown seems to be all that serious or dangerous to him. Even when he does get scared, he shows the sort of joyful fear that comes from actually wanting to be frightened. It’s unclear whether Greg is actually aware that The Unknown is a sort of dream world, but it’s clear that he takes “real life” a bit more seriously. None of his reactions to the strangeness of The Unknown seem very logical. On the other hand, prior to his and Wirt’s arrival in The Unknown, he displays a more typical sense of reason, at least for a child. He is genuinely concerned with Wirt’s life and happiness and proposes reasonable solutions to Wirt’s problems. Considering Wirt’s anxious nature, he’s actually even more reasonable than his older brother is in the real world.
While in The Unknown, however, Greg serves as a beacon of hope and joy. He keeps Wirt going despite the resentment that Wirt often feels for him. Greg sees The Unknown as a playground essentially, just a fun adventure that he and Wirt are having. Unlike Wirt, he doesn’t really show any strong desires to go home. For the most part he seems perfectly happy to just wander around, have fun and see what else The Unknown has in store for them. He never gives up and he’s remarkably clever for his age due to his imagination and non-linear thought processes. When The Beast gives him three archetypical tasks that are essentially just riddles, Greg figures them all out within minutes. The Beast can only get you if you become physically ill or weak, or if you lose hope and will. The Beast almost gets Wirt because Wirt is losing his Will, but The Beast has to trick Greg into staying out in the cold until he is weakened. Greg’s spirit seems to be practically unbeatable.
Greg is also extremely empathetic. Even at times when he seems to not be caring about Wirt, it’s more because Greg is choosing what to care about. Greg is actually sort of an anchor for Wirt. Whenever Wirt is in danger of having an anxiety attack, Greg is there being ridiculous to keep Wirt focused. This actually seems to be intentional on Greg’s part, or at least instinctive. He cares deeply for his brother and similarly cares deeply for pretty much everyone he meets. He wants to spread happiness to others, even at the expense of his own happiness. At one point his pet frog is on the verge of leaving them to pursue a musical career, and Greg is too busy being happy for his frog to be upset about it. He goes out of his way to help people, and he doesn’t even really have to try that hard. He’s just the sort of person who lights up a room, or a whole forest, when they walk in.
Abilities/Special Powers: Greg is a squishy human child with no powers to speak of.
Third-Person Sample: Getting attacked by a giant wolf with glowing eyes was probably the coolest thing that had ever happened to Greg. It hadn’t even occurred to him until well after the fact that he probably should have been scared. While it had been happening, Greg was too busy noticing how great the whole thing was. It was like something right out of a story book or a movie—getting attacked by a monster and then knocking it into a mill wheel to save the day. Maybe it was supposed to be scary. Wirt was certainly scared, but Wirt was scared of pretty much everything.
Oh well. The Unknown was scary, sure, but it was the fun kind of scary. Kind of like Halloween. Greg was just having too much fun. Even doing chores for the pumpkin people had been kind of fun. Heck, even school was fun if you could make up songs for it. Maybe he should try that back home? That might make first grade less boring.
Home, that was kind of a strange thing to think about. Greg found himself sort of forgetting about it every once in awhile, like maybe they had always been wandering in the Unknown. He was pretty sure that eventually they would get home, but he was also pretty sure that home was far away, and that was just fine. He was having too much fun out here in the Unknown. Home could wait. There was still a lot of Unknown to explore—and maybe a Beast to defeat.
First-Person Sample: Ohhh, whooaaa! Hello? Ah, wow, am I on TV? Hello, world! This is Greg, and I’m coming to you live from in front of a really big house! It might even be as big as Unkie Endicott’s house. The weather is pretty cloudy and windy and it might rain. Or maybe snow. I’m not really a weather guy. I think I’d be better at doing, um, like animal news, like news about puppies and possums and things. Oh, that reminds me! Has anyone seen Agent Seaweed? Agent Seaweed is my frog. He’s big and green and sounds like this: rrrrrooorrooopp.
